Essential Skills in Instruction:
From What to How
October 28 & 29, 2009
Delta Ottawa Hotel, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
SkillPlan is pleased to present a national practitioner's conference on Essential Skills in Instruction.
CONFERENCE OVERVIEW
The Essential Skills in Instruction conference is a unique opportunity for practitioners to learn from researchers and experienced practitioners. Nearly a decade has elapsed since HRSDC posted Essential Skills Profiles. We know what the Essential Skills are and how they relate to sustained employment and functioning in society. Practitioners across the country are translating this research into practical applications to enhance instruction. This conference is an opportunity for both experienced and less experienced practitioners to compare practices, share ideas and network.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
We welcome participants who are interested or already using work-related materials in instructional settings. Classroom teachers, workplace educators, English language instructors and professionals delivering programs with employment goals will find this conference a useful way to stimulate ideas, learn about resources and fine tune methodology.
PROGRAM THEMES
The main theme of the conference is the “How to” of effectively teaching Essential Skills. Many sessions will offer opportunities to hear about existing programs and to examine methodology. Other sessions will take a closer look at approaches taken in various Essential Skills resources.
CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS
This conference is the culmination of a two year HRSDC funded project. Each day of the conference will begin with a key note speaker. Sessions will include discussion groups on topics of interest, reports on research, panel discussions, and showcases of programs with industry partners.
Projects that will be showcased include the results of research to find out how practitioners are using work-related materials in instruction to increase learning, and instructional modules with DVD featuring oral communication on the job.
SkillPlan acknowledges the significant input of a national committee in planning this two day conference. If you are looking for information, practical ideas, and an opportunity to strengthen networks, we hope you will consider attending.
